What is Text-to-Speech?

Text-to-Speech (TTS) is an assistive technology that converts digital content into audio, enabling most personal digital devices to read selected content aloud.

TTS is now integrated into many digital devices including computers, tablet, and smartphones as well as web browsers to benefit all digital users.

Please note: TTS technology requires searchable PDFs to work. It is incompatible with scanned or picture PDFs.

Submit Alternate Format Request

Scanned PDFs are physical documents such as book excerpts or government records that have been digitized by a scanner and saved as a PDF. Scanned PDFs are images with embedded text, making them inaccessible to users of assistive technology because they cannot be “read” by a computer the way a visual reader would perceive text rather than image. The tell tale sign that you’re working with a scanned PDF is if you attempt to highlight a sentence in the document and it highlights the whole page.

Please note: It is possible to create a scanned PDF that is searchable, but that does not guarantee accessibility compatibility with assistive technology and therefore is not a replacement for a digitally created searchable PDF.

If you have submitted an alternate format semester request and encounter a scanned PDF in you courses, send it via email to the alternate format team (accesstext@uic.edu) immediately. 

Searchable PDFs are digitally created documents such as journal articles that contain text readable by visual readers and digital devices. A user is able to search a searchable PDF because the digital device can catalog the content. The PDF is searchable if you can both highlight lines of text and Control+ F in the document.

Please note: While the accessibility of a searchable PDFs exceeds that of a scanned PDF and is usable to many users and assistive technology, a searchable PDF does not guarantee it is fully accessible to screen readers. For PDFs to be screen reader accessible, the PDF must be accurately tagged and include alt text descriptions.

UIC’s new learning management system, Canvas offers built-in alternative formats for all uploaded content. Look for the blue icon of a figure in a circle for documents with alternative formats enabled. Some formats require wifi to enable.

Kurzweil is a TTS software that creates a customizable experience for students to listen and visually follow along with course material.

Kurzweil is for students who have been approved for alternate format in Searchable PDF and Kurzweil 3000. After creating an account, students can upload course material to Kurzweil’s Universal Library. If students encounter any issues uploading materials to Kurzweil, they should email the alternate format team, at accesstext@uic.edu.

Microsoft Windows OS does not currently have an offline built-in TTS feature. In order for searchable PDFs to be read aloud once downloaded to users’ desktop, right click, select open with, choose preferred browser with built-in TTS.

Apple has multiple built-in TSS options across their devices including Speak Selection, Speak Screen, and Accessibility Reader.

User preferences can be set in the settings app for voices, speed, pronunciation, and more.

There are a variety of eReaders apps and devices that have built-in TTS features.
